  3. Phraseology, A Word-Analyzing Text Editor

    December 31, 2011 by Davidtrump

Phraseology is a new iPad app for writers. It offers much of the usual stuff found in iPad writing apps, but it also brings some very clever features not found elsewhere.
First, though, what doesn’t it have? Phraseology has no support for Dropbox, nor iCloud: storage is strictly local (although you can easily export or print [...]

  4. Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

    December 31, 2011 by Davidtrump

    hp google cloud print

HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

  5. Quadrocopters don creepy eyes, build synthetic Christmas tree of envy (video)

    December 31, 2011 by Davidtrump

First we let them play music, then they started juggling. Now quadrocopters are feeling emotions as well; namely, jealousy. One of Flying Machine Arena’s dainty quadrocopters, nicknamed Juliet, was compelled to build its own synthetic Christmas tree after spying an authentic fir through a glass window. Sure, stacked bricks of festive foam seem innocent enough, but look into those ping-pong ball eyes and tell us you aren’t a little worried that next year’s “war on Christmas” will be the machine’s war on humans. Fly past the break to see Juliet’s envious construction project for yourself.

  6. Slime molds could hold key to new kinds of intelligence, help Statue of Liberty walk

    December 30, 2011 by Davidtrump

See that yellow amoeboid slime mold? It’s up to something. A team of Japanese scientists at Future University Hakodate led by professor Toshiyuki Nakagaki has found evidence that physarum polycephalum — or grape-cluster slime — are capable of navigating mazes and can organize their cells to find the most direct route. Nakagaki and others believe this could be the key to designing bio-computers capable of solving complex problems. According to Nakagaki, the slime’s cells appear to have a kind of information-processing ability that allows them to “optimize” the route along which the mold grows to reach food while avoiding stresses — like light — that may damage them.

Over at Kyushu University, researcher Atsushi Tero told the AFP news agency: “Computers are not so good at analysing the best routes that connect many base points because the volume of calculations becomes too large for them. But slime molds, without calculating all the possible options, can flow over areas in an impromptu manner and gradually find the best routes.” Tero and other researchers have expressed hope that slime mold networks could be used in future designs of new transportation systems, electric transmission lines and understanding the human nervous system. Just remember, if you’re going to coat the interior of the Statue of Liberty with some pink slime you found in the sewer, make sure you play some upbeat music to go along with it. It’s just a good idea in the long run.

  8. Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

    December 30, 2011 by Davidtrump

    Bing transitions

Bing’s new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions — the fade in and out — and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States – English and pray that you’re part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft’s Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

  10. SiriusXM unveils the Android-powered Lynx portable radio

    December 30, 2011 by Davidtrump

    SiriusXM Lynx

SiriusXM today unveiled its latest portable satellite radio — the Lynx — and wouldn't ya know it, this sucker's running Android. Actually, it's running an unknown version of Android, and if we hadn't told you, chances are you wouldn't even notice. It's being billed as "everything you can imagine," and it's a triple threat as a dockable in-car satellite radio, or you can use it with a home docking kit, or just palm the sucker and play back via 3.5mm headphones — or Bluetooth.

It's also a "SiriusXM 2.0" device and connects to the Internet via Wifi (for easy software upgrades). Change channels and hit a song in the middle? No worries, the "Tune Start" feature lets you start over at the beginning of a song. Or you can build a library of 200 hours of programming from your favorite channels. Or pause, rewind and replay. And the "Show finder" feature sound especially promising, with a guide that shows the next week's worth of content. For satellite radio fans, it sounds like a beast.

For traditional Android fans? Well, we're just going to have to wait and get our hands on this guy. But this is what Android was designed for, folks. An expandable and extendable operating system. And you're going to see more and more of this as time goes on.

We've got a photo barage and video after the break.

  11. IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

    December 30, 2011 by Davidtrump

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop’s battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top — though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn’t necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11′s case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we’d really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test…
